Amsayu Method of Longevity Calculation

The Amsayu method is one of the classical techniques in Vedic astrology used to estimate a person's lifespan. It is applied when the Ascendant (Lagna) is stronger than the Sun and Moon, and relies on the Navamsa divisions of planetary longitudes. Unlike Pindayu or Lagnayu, Amsayu emphasizes mathematical precision and planetary dignity, offering a karmic snapshot of vitality and longevity.

This method is especially useful for astrologers seeking a quantitative Ayurdaya estimate, and it integrates Bharan Sanskar (enhancement) and Haran Sanskar (reduction) based on planetary strength, exaltation, retrogression, and debilitation.

Steps of Amsayu Longevity Calculation:

1. Convert planetary longitude into absolute degrees from 0° Aries.

2. Convert degrees into minutes: Multiply degrees by 60.     
   Each degree = 60 minutes; each minute = 60 seconds. We convert the Nirayana longitude of each planet into total minutes:

3. Divide minutes by 200: Each Navamsa = 3°20′ = 200 minutes.

4. Multiply Navamsa count by 12: Each Navamsa contributes 12 years.

5. Apply Bharan Sanskar (Additions):

   • Exalted or Retrograde → ×3

   • Own sign, Vargottama, own Navamsa/Drekkana → ×2

6. Apply Haran Sanskar (Deductions):

   • Debilitated, combust, or in Dusthana → ÷2

7. Sum all adjusted ages from 9 planets + Ascendant.

8. Normalize total by dividing by 180 to scale to human lifespan.
