The Pindayu method is a classical Vedic technique for estimating human longevity based on planetary positions, strengths, and dignity. It is applied when the Sun is stronger than the Moon and Ascendant.
The Pindayu method is one of the three principal Ayurdaya techniques in Vedic astrology, alongside Amsayu and Lagnayu. It is used when the Sun dominates the chart in strength—either by placement, dignity, or Shadbala—over the Moon and Lagna. This method assigns fixed lifespan values to each planet based on their maximum potential contribution to life, which is then modified according to their actual placement in the birth chart.
Unlike Amsayu, which uses Navamsa divisions, Pindayu focuses on the arc of influence of each planet relative to its exaltation and debilitation points. It also incorporates Haranas (deductions) based on planetary afflictions and house placements, making it a nuanced and karmically sensitive approach to longevity analysis.
Detailed Steps of the Pindayu Calculation:
🔹 Step 1: Assign Maximum Years to Each Planet
Each planet has a maximum lifespan contribution when placed at its point of deep exaltation:
Note: Rahu and Ketu are excluded as they lack physical bodies.Step 2: Determine Nirayana Longitude
Step 3: Compute Arc of Longevity
Find the angular difference between the planet’s position and its deep exaltation point.
If the difference is less than 180°, subtract it from 360° to get the effective arc.
This arc reflects how close the planet is to its optimal vitality.
Step 4: Calculate Planetary Contribution
Step 5: Apply Haranas (Deductions)
i. Chakrapath Haran
ii. Shatrukshetra Haran
iii. Ashtangata Haran
iv. Kruradrishta Haran (Lagna-specific)
If Lagna is aspected by malefics, deduct 108 years.
If Lagna is occupied and aspected by malefics, deduct 54 years.

Conclusion:
The Pindayu method offers a quantitative yet spiritually grounded approach to estimating lifespan. It reflects the energetic contribution of each planet based on its dignity and placement, while also accounting for karmic afflictions through Haranas. This method is best used in charts where the Sun is dominant, and it complements other Ayurdaya techniques for a holistic view of longevity.
