Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880 – June 1, 1968) was an American author, lecturer, and advocate for people with disabilities. She became deaf and blind at 19 months old and, with the help of her teacher Anne Sullivan, learned to communicate, graduated from college, and became a world-famous activist and writer.

Early Life

- 1887 — On March 3, 20-year-old Anne Sullivan arrived in Tuscumbia as Helen’s teacher. On April 5, the famous breakthrough occurred at the water pump when Sullivan spelled “W-A-T-E-R” into Helen’s hand while water ran over it. Helen suddenly understood that objects have names.
