Periodicity of Planets - Udu Dasa System

According to Indian Astrological system, we confirm the Birth Star of Individual according to Moon's position at time of the birth. Influence of Planets on humans affects at the periodicity during his/her life time. This is also called "Udu Dasa System". Udu = Nakshatra / Asterism.

Planets  -  Ruling Period
 Sun - 6 Yrs.; Moon - 10 Yrs.; Mars - 7 Yrs.; Rahu - 18 Yrs.; Jupiter - 16 Yrs.; Saturn - 19 Yrs.;
 Mercury - 17 Yrs.; Ketu - 7 Yrs.; Venus - 20 Yrs.

Transition - Movement of Planets

Transits primarily involve developments in the life circumstances outside the individual’s control. It is essential to study the method of daily movement of planets before going through their effects.

Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus are Fast moving while Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are Slow moving planets. Their transits can be ascertained by consulting the almanac (Panchangam) regularly.

Daily movement of Planets as below:
Sun
1 degree
Moon
13to15degrees
Mars
30 to 45 minutes
Mercury
65 to 100 minutes
Venus
62 to 82 minutes
Jupiter
5 to 15 minutes
Saturn
2 minutes
Rahu & Ketu
3 minutes

At these speeds, Sun takes 30 days / one month to move from one sign to other; Moon takes approximately 2 ¼  days to move from one sign to other; as in case of  Jupiter takes one year; Rahu & Ketu takes 18 months (anti-clockwise) and Saturn takes 2 ½ years.

Astronomical measurement of Celestial Earth

A)    Celestial Sphere / Cosmic Sphere: The imaginary sphere in the space surrounding our entire Solar system.

B)    Celestial Poles: If the Earth axis is extended infinitely towards North and South, it will meet the imaginary surface of the cosmic sphere at some point.

These points on the surface of cosmic sphere are known as the Celestial Poles and the extended axis becomes the imaginary axis of the celestial sphere.

C)     Celestial Equator: The projection of earth’s equator on the imaginary surface of the celestial sphere is called ‘Celestial Equator’.

Brief about Panchangam

Panchangam also called "Almanac" consists of 5 Parts:
  1. Tithi,
  2. Vara [Week-day],
  3. Nakshatra [Star],
  4. Yoga [Combined results of Sun + Moon Locations],
  5.  Karana [Half of Tithi].
Panchanga or Panchang is Hindu Almanac. The literal translation of Panchanga is "Five Limbs". The five energies it represents are considered for selecting an appropriate and auspicious time for ceremonies or certain actions. Panchanga is consulted in matters of timing, i.e. calculating muhurta concerning marriage, education, travel and agriculture to name a few. It is very interesting to note the importance given to Sun and Moon in ascertaining a good time. While fixing a muhurta, we cannot possibly choose a time that is perfect in all respects, we therefore should try to choose a time that would do more good than bad.

The five limbs and a brief description is as follows:

• Tithi (along with Paksha): A tithi means a lunar day. A lunar day is about 0.95 of a normal day. When the Moon moves towards the Sun, it is called Krishna Paksha, otherwise its Shukla Paksha. When the Sun and Moon are closer to each other, it is Amavasya and when they are 180 degrees apart, it becomes Poornima.

• Vaar (Day of the weeks): The days of the week along with the ruler planet in the brackets are - Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus) and Saturday (Saturn).

• Nakshatra (Constellation): Apart from the 12 signs, there are 27 constellations that are like "mansions" or "houses". The planets visit these houses while on their journeys through the skies. Nakshatra is a generic term and all planets are in one Nakshatra or the other at any given time. However, when someone says Janma Nakshatra or daily Nakshatra, he/she specifically means Moon Nakshatra.

• Yoga: Yoga means combination. In this context of Panchanga, it means a particular combination of Moon and Sun. This combination is said to affect a person's health.

• Karana: Karana means half a lunar day. There are 11 Karanas.

1) Tithis:
One Tithis form 12 degrees distance of Moon from the Sun.
There are total 30 Tithis divided into 15 each in 2 Fort-nights (Bright & Dark).

Starts with Padyami, Vidiya, Thadiya, Chavithi, Panchami, Shashti, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, Dasami, Ekadasi, Dwadasi, Trayodasi, Chaturdasi, Pournami and Amavasya.

The Full Moon-Day is called as " Pournami " formed when the distance between the Sun & Moon is 180 degrees.

While the New Moon-Day is called " Amavasya " is formed when Sun & Moon are in Same degrees.

The entire process is done in 29 1/2 Days.

2) Week-Days :
As we know, there are 7 Week-days starting from Sunday, Monday Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Every Week - day starts with Hora (Hour) of that ruling planet which is lord of Week-Day run in sequence.

For E.g:- Sunday Sunrise starts with
Sun - Venus - Mercury - Moon - Saturn - Jupiter - Mars Horas which continues every hour till end of day (24 Hrs).

3) Nakshatras :
We already discussed there are 27 Stars [Aswini to Revati] covers 360˚ .

There is another star called " Abhijit Star " occurs in Capricorn between 270˚ 40' to 280˚ 54' between the last quarter of Uttarashada star and Shravana star.

Each Zodiac Sign is 30˚ consists of 3 stars of 9 Padas (every Star consists 4 Padas). Thus there are 27*9 = 108 Padas.

4) Yogas :
The Sidereal Graha Sphutas of the Sun and the Moon when added leads to a Yoga. These are in order:

1)Vishkambham
2) Preeti
3) Ayushman
4) Soubhagya
5) Sobhana
6) Atiganda
7) Sukarma
8) Dhruti
9) Soola
10) Ganda
11) Vruddhi
12) Dhruva
13) Vyaghata
14) Harshana
15) Vajra
16) Siddhi
17) Vyatipata
18) Variyaan
19) Parigha
20) Siva
21) Siddha
22) Sadhya
23) Subha
24) Sukla
25) Brahma
26) Indra
27) Vydhruthi

5) Karanas :
Karana is obtained when Tithi is made into 2 equal parts. There are 60 Karanas in a Month.

Each Karana is counted 4 times in Fort-night.

1) Bava, 2) Balava, 3) Kaulava, 4) Taitula, 5) Garaja, 6) Vanija, 7) Vishti [Bhadra].

In addition, there are 4 more Karanas by name 8) Sakini, 9) Chatushpada, 10) Naga and 11) Kimstughna each coming only once in a Month.

Kimstughna is first Karana of the first day of the Month followed by first 7 numbered Karanas in order each eight times and last 3 Karans occur once. 1+(7 * 8) + 3 = 60.

Definition of Ayanamsa

The difference between the Rasi Charts of Indian System comprising of Nakshatras (starts with Ashwini Star) and the Western System based on Seasonal set up is noted as Ayanamsa.

The Astrological System adopted by Indians is called the " Nirayana (or) Sidereal " System, While Western Astro-analysis is called " Sayana (or) Tropical " system.

Sayana means inclusive of Ayanamsa while Nirayana means exclusive of Ayanamsa.

The date of Coincidence of the Tropical & Sidereal Zodiacs was found to be 285 A.D on 22-March at 21H:27M(IST) as Zero Ayanamsa by Great Astro-Mathematician Lahiri.[According to Calender Reforms Committee].

Various Scholars have different opinions on Ayanamsa Date:
  1. Cheiro  -  388 B.C
  2. D. Davidson  -  317 B.C
  3. G Massay  -  255 B.C
  4. Therens  -  125 B.C
  5. P Covneez  -  0
  6. Cyril Fagan  -  221 A.D
  7. Lahiri  -  285 A.D
  8. Krishna Murthy  -  297 A.D
  9. P.S Ray  -  319 A.D
  10. B.V Raman  -  397 A.D
  11. Sepharial  -  498 A.D
  12. Madhura Krishna Murthy Sastry  -  411 A.D
  13. Swamy Kannu Pillai  -  532 A.D
Degrees in Sayana system - Ayanamsa = Degrees in Nirayana system. This formula is useful to calculate the sphutas of Graha, Bhava and Lagnas.

    Today Ayanamsa [Chitrapaksha/ Lahiri] = 24˚:3': 48" {24-Oct-2014}

Precession of Equinoxes

The 2 intersection points at which Celestial Equator cuts the Ecliptic in an angle of 23 1/2˚ degrees are called "Equinoxes" (or) " Equinoctial Points ". Day and Night are equal on these 2 days (points) in the Year.
  •  Ecliptic is fixed, the Equator is only one that is Moving.
There are 2 Equinoxes i.e One is Vernal Equinox [Vasanta Vishuvat] occurs nearly on 21st March and other is Autumnal Equinox [Sarat Vishuvat] occurs nearly on 22nd September.

There are 2 more points called " Solstices " [Ayanatas]
One such point Northernmost latitude (Hemisphere) of Sun's apparant path [Where it reaches Highest] known as " Summer Solstice " (or) "Uttarayana" dawn approximately on 21st June.

And anthor known as " Winter Solstice " (or) "Dakshinayana" where Sun reaches Lowest point of Southern Hemisphere dusk approximately on 22nd Dec..

The Vernal Equinox was found to precede 1˚ degree in every 72 Years i.e 50.24 Seconds Backwards per Year.

Thus the intersectin point of the ecliptic changes on the celestial equator. Due to this, there is shift in Solstice which is called " Vishu Chalanam" [Precession of Equinox].

In other way, The position of any fixed star near the ecliptic and near the border line of the Constellation Aries could be chosen to be the determinant, or standard reference point, in order to observe this yearly precession of the Vernal Equinoctial Point among the fixed stars. The Hindu astronomers selected Revati as the determinant fixed star, and considered this star as marking Aries O° of the constellations. Each year the equinoctial point of Aries O° of the signs will be found to have precessed some 50" of space farther west of Revati than it was the previous year.
The meaning of the term, "Precession of the Equinoxes," is now clear. It refers to the slight annual increase in distance of the equinoctial points from a standard fixed star, which is considered as Aries O° in the Zodiac of the Constellations, while the Vernal Equinox is considered as Aries O° in the Zodiac of the Signs.

    1 Age Cycle = 72 Y (equinox Point) * 30˚ (one Zodiac Sign length) = 2160Yrs.
       A Precession Cycle = 72 Y * 360˚ = 25920 Years.
  •  We are at the moment of Piscean Age will enter into Aquarian Age on 2444 A.D.
