N.C Lahiri was a great scholar, highly respected for his knowledge of Mathematics and Astronomy, often referred to as Ganitacharya and Ganit Kalanidhi. He earned a great reputation for his Lahiri Indian Ephemeris of Planets' Positions. He was a member of the International Astronomical Union (Paris), Former Secretary of Calender Reform Committee constituted by the Government of India and Officer-in-charge of Nautical Almanac Unit and Member, State Almanac Committee under West Bengal.
Lahiri Ephemeris (from 1948) is based on the Nirayana or Sidereal system of calculation which adopts the year 285 A.D or 207 Saka as the Zero Ayanamsa year which is eventually recommended by Calender Reform Committee of Govt. of India in 1952 for Rastriya Panchangas.
Lahiri died on 3rd January 1980 in Ketu bhukti of Jupiter Dasa.
