1955 (March 7): Born in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

1970s: Dropped out of his economics degree to pursue Indian theatre. He eventually moved to New Delhi and graduated from the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD) in 1978.

1982: Made his minor on-screen acting debut in the film Aagaman.

1984: Delivered a monumental breakthrough performance in Mahesh Bhatt’s Saaransh. At just 28 years old, he convincingly played BV Pradhan, a grieving 65-year-old retired headmaster. The role won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

1985: Married fellow theatre and film actor Kirron Kher.

1986–1988: Established his versatility by pivoting into intense negative roles, playing memorable antagonists in films like Karma (1986) and Tezaab (1988). He won a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Vijay (1988).
