- 1956: Born on March 9 in London, England, to Chandran Tharoor (a journalist with The Statesman) and Lily Tharoor. The family returned to India when he was two years old.
- 1962–1971: Received a pan-India education — Montfort School (Yercaud), Campion School (Mumbai), and St. Xavier’s Collegiate School (Kolkata).
- 1975: Graduated with a B.A. in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, where he was President of the Students’ Union and founded the college quiz club.
- 1978: At the age of just 22, earned a Ph.D. in International Relations and Affairs from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University (USA). He became the youngest person ever to receive a doctorate from Fletcher at that time.

- 1998–2001: Served as Executive Assistant to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Director of Communications & Special Projects.
- 2001–2007: Appointed Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information — one of the highest-ranking Indians in UN history.
- 2006: Nominated by India as a candidate for UN Secretary-General. Finished second to Ban Ki-moon.
