The Vimshottari Dasha system (VMDS), a cornerstone of Vedic astrology, is a powerful predictive tool that divides the entire lifespan into planetary periods (Dashas). It's based on the Moon's Nakshatra at the time of birth. These major planetary periods are further subdivided into smaller periods, creating a layered system of prediction. There are typically five levels (or even more, theoretically) that are commonly analyzed for precise timing of events.
Here are the 5 levels of the Vimshottari Dasha system:
-
Maha Dasha (MD) (Major Period):
- Description: This is the primary and longest planetary period in the Vimshottari Dasha system. The total duration of one complete cycle of all nine planets is 120 years. The starting Mahadasha is determined by the Nakshatra (birth star) of the Moon at the time of birth.
- Duration: Each planet has a fixed duration for its Mahadasha:
- Ketu: 7 years
- Venus: 20 years
- Sun: 6 years
- Moon: 10 years
- Mars: 7 years
- Rahu: 18 years
- Jupiter: 16 years
- Saturn: 19 years
- Mercury: 17 years
- Effects: The Mahadasha lord dominates the themes and overall experiences of that period. It sets the broader tone for the years it rules, influencing major life events, changes, and the general direction of one's life. If the Mahadasha lord is strong and well-placed, the period tends to be favorable; if weak or afflicted, it can bring challenges.
- Example: If you are running your Jupiter Mahadasha (16 years), the overarching themes of Jupiter (wisdom, expansion, wealth, religion, children, higher education) will be prominent in your life.
-
Antar Dasha (AD) (Sub-Period or Bhukti):
- Description: Each Mahadasha is further subdivided into nine smaller periods, known as Antar Dashas. Each Antar Dasha is ruled by one of the nine planets in the same sequence as the Mahadashas.
- Duration: The duration of an Antar Dasha is proportional to the combined duration of the Mahadasha and the Antar Dasha lord's full Mahadasha.
- Formula: (Mahadasha Lord's period / 120) * (Antardasha Lord's period)
- Effects: The Antar Dasha lord refines the results of the Mahadasha lord. It brings more specific events and influences into play. It acts like a filter or a more detailed manifestation of the broader Mahadasha themes. The results will be a blend of both the Mahadasha and Antar Dasha lords' influences.
- Example: During your Jupiter Mahadasha, you might be in Jupiter-Sun Antar Dasha (Jupiter Mahadasha, Sun Antar Dasha). The themes of both Jupiter and Sun (authority, health, father, government) will blend, perhaps leading to career advancements (Jupiter's expansion, Sun's authority) or health focus.
-
Pratyantar Dasha (PD) (Sub-Sub-Period):
- Description: Each Antar Dasha is further subdivided into nine even smaller periods called Pratyantar Dashas, again ruled by the nine planets in sequence.
- Duration: These periods are much shorter, ranging from a few days to a few months.
- Effects: The Pratyantar Dasha pinpoints events with even greater precision. It reveals the exact nature of the events and their immediate triggers. This level brings the general themes of the Mahadasha and Antar Dasha down to a very specific, actionable level.
- Example: Within your Jupiter-Sun Antar Dasha, you might enter a Jupiter-Sun-Mars Pratyantar Dasha. This combination could trigger specific events related to Mars (energy, conflict, property, siblings) within the broader themes of Jupiter and Sun, perhaps leading to a property dispute or an energetic new project.
-
Sookshma Dasha (Micro Period):
- Description: Each Pratyantar Dasha is further divided into nine Sookshma Dashas.
- Duration: These periods are very short, often lasting only a few days or even hours.
- Effects: Sookshma Dashas are used for extremely precise timing of daily events and finer details. They reveal the most immediate and micro-level influences.
- Example: During a Jupiter-Sun-Mars Pratyantar Dasha, a specific Sookshma Dasha of Venus could indicate a short period of enjoyment, a minor financial gain, or a social interaction related to art or beauty.
-
Prana Dasha (Breath Period):
- Description: This is the fifth and most minute level of subdivision in Vimshottari Dasha, where each Sookshma Dasha is divided into nine Prana Dashas.
- Duration: These periods are extremely brief, lasting only minutes or a few hours.
- Effects: Prana Dashas are used by advanced practitioners for the most granular level of prediction, often relating to very subtle shifts in energy, mental states, or the exact moment of an event's manifestation.
- Example: During a Sookshma Dasha of Venus, a Prana Dasha of Saturn might bring a brief moment of anxiety or a minor delay, even within an otherwise favorable short period.
Why are these levels important?
The multi-layered structure of Vimshottari Dasha allows astrologers to:
- Provide highly precise predictions: By combining the influences of all five active Dasha lords, one can pinpoint when and how events are likely to unfold.
- Understand the evolution of themes: The Mahadasha sets the main theme, which is then refined by the Antar Dasha, specific actions and events highlighted by the Pratyantar Dasha, and the minute details by Sookshma and Prana Dashas.
- Analyze complex situations: When multiple planets are influencing an event, these levels help to untangle their individual roles and combined effects.
In practice, for most general predictions, astrologers primarily focus on the Mahadasha, Antar Dasha, and Pratyantar Dasha levels, as Sookshma and Prana Dashas are extremely fine-tuned and require very precise birth times and advanced interpretative skills.
Hi how can we know which is all the dashas going this current time and when the prana dasha going to change. Is there any software or website from where it can be known
